Fine Art "Kitsch": Playing with Irony (Mixed Media)

We welcome back Visiting Artist Sally French for "Fine Art "Kitsch": Playing with Irony".

  • "kitch": (def.) "Pieces of art or other objects that appeal to popular or uncultivated taste, akin to being garish or overly sentimental.
  • "irony: (def.) "Using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic results."

Participants will be sharing materials, which they deem to be "kitsch", to make their own collâges on 12"x12” wood panels, with the goal of transforming "kitch" materials into an ironic statement. We will discuss the technical ways of transforming materials and problems therein.  The final day, the artworks will be presented and, as a group, we will consider how successfully we transformed the "kitsch" into an emphatic or humorous voice. There will also be a start-to-finish demonstration of a synthetic-resin pour for the collâge surface, so that participants may be provided with an alternative to framing.

SUPPLIES: Hui will provide two 12”x12” panels, glue

Students to bring:

  • Each student will bring (for yourself or to be shared with the group) materials they deem as being “kitsch”, that would lend themselves to collâge.
  • This could include papers such as vintage labels, wallpaper, book pages, journal pages, rhinestones, sequins, small beads, charms, dried flowers, fishing lure, pinks, pastels, olive greens. old comics, black & white photocopies on Xerox paper or other light-weight paper.
